Joel Roberts, 22, joined the Navy in February of 2007 and within days had jumped at the opportunity to swim the channel. He is currently on Initial Sea Training onboard HMS EDINBURGH as she transits back to the UK following her Atlantic Patrol Task (South) deployment arriving back in the UK 4 days prior to competition!
A keen swimmer during his teenage years, he captained the Scottish Schools and Youth Squads and was a member of the Scottish Senior Elite Team and the Scottish institute of Sport until his retirement in 2005; a firm base which he hopes will serve him well during this swim!
Training for the channel swim has been conducted mainly battling the strong currents of the South Atlantic in the Falkland Isles (to get used to the cold!) and the warmer climes of the Brazilian coast! Being a true, but determined, novice to open water swimming, he also plans, whilst back in the UK to swim inter-services, to complete a few sessions off the south coast.
When not fattening up to brace the cold of the channel, and time allows away from the Navy, he enjoys all things food, travelling and sport.
